The United Kingdom: a unified profession

Unlike the United States, where actuarial education is split among several societies, in the United Kingdom the entire profession belongs to a single body.

In the United Kingdom the actuarial profession is unified in a single body, the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), which brings every area of actuarial practice under one organization. This contrasts with the United States, where education is divided among separate bodies such as the SOA (life, health and pensions) and the CAS (property and casualty). The IFoA awards two main designations, AIA (Associate) and FIA (Fellow, the full qualification), which certify different levels of professional competence. It is one of the oldest actuarial organizations in the world, with roots in the Institute of Actuaries in London (1848) and the Faculty of Actuaries in Edinburgh (1856), which merged in 2010. Today it plays a strong global role, with members in many countries and notable influence on the regulation, education and standards of the profession internationally.
