Before buying

The first step is not the store but the syllabus. Every SOA, CAS or IFoA exam publishes its reading list with the exact edition; buying an earlier edition can leave out tested chapters. For CNSF accreditation and the college certification in Mexico, the syllabi rely mostly on Mexican regulation, which is free on the CNSF website.

Before paying, check whether the body offers the text at no cost, whether there is a digital edition, and what shipping and import charges add up to. For titles chosen for their historical and technical importance, see the essential books library; for reserving methods, the IBNR methods guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which book do I need for each SOA exam?
The one listed in the official syllabus for the sitting you will take. The SOA publishes each syllabus as a PDF with the reading list and exact edition; manual providers follow those readings.
Are there reliable free actuarial books?
Yes. The CAS offers the Friedland reserving text as a PDF, and the Open Actuarial Textbooks Project publishes Loss Data Analytics in English and Spanish. Professional bodies also publish syllabi and sample exams at no cost.
Are SOA study notes free?
No. The SOA states that its study notes are sold in hard copy through its online store. Syllabi and sample exams are free.
Is it worth buying abroad?
It depends on the total cost. Some suppliers ship to Mexico, but international shipments can trigger import taxes and fees paid by the buyer. Compare with the digital edition or a domestic store.
