Courses in the actuarial science degree

What an actuarial science degree actually covers: the course map organized by the six broad knowledge areas common to Mexican programs.

The Licenciatura en Actuaría (bachelor's degree in actuarial science) combines a very strong mathematical foundation with probability, finance, economics, programming and the core actuarial subjects. Although each university sequences and names its courses differently, almost every curriculum covers these six blocks.

1. Core mathematics

The foundation on which everything else is built.

  • Differential and integral calculus
  • Multivariable calculus
  • Higher algebra and linear algebra
  • Differential equations
  • Mathematical analysis
  • Analytic geometry

2. Probability and statistics

The language of uncertainty, at the heart of actuarial thinking.

  • Probability I and II
  • Statistical inference
  • Stochastic processes
  • Survival models
  • Multivariate statistics
  • Regression analysis

3. Finance and economics

The time value of money, markets and the economic context.

  • Financial mathematics
  • Theory of interest
  • Microeconomics and macroeconomics
  • Financial accounting
  • Financial instruments and derivatives
  • Investment portfolios

4. Actuarial mathematics

The core of the degree: valuing risks and long-term commitments.

  • Life insurance actuarial mathematics
  • Property and casualty actuarial mathematics
  • Risk theory
  • Demography and mortality tables
  • Pensions and social security
  • Reserves and reinsurance

5. Programming and data

The tools of the modern actuary.

  • Programming (Python, R)
  • Databases and SQL
  • Numerical analysis
  • Simulation (Monte Carlo)
  • Data science and machine learning
  • Predictive models

6. Complementary training

The legal, ethical and professional context of practice.

  • Legal framework for insurance and pensions
  • Enterprise risk management (ERM)
  • Ethics and professional practice
  • Operations research
  • Seminars and professional internships
  • Specialization electives
